The Five of Pentacles
Five of Pentacles

Card Nicknames: The poverty card, the hardship card.

Short meaning: The Five of Pentacles represents hardship, usually financial problems. It could mean a period of unemployment or other economic troubles. Drawing this card in the past position usually indicates that life was hard as a child, perhaps the family was poor or parents were harsh. In the future position, the card may predict a coming job loss or money flow problems. Sometimes the card refers to other types of hardship, such as poor health. If drawn while a person's economic status is solid, perhaps there is a need to watch finances more carefully, or save money for upcoming needs and shortages.

"Loss of money or position. Trouble about material things. Toil, labor, land cultivation, building, knowledge and acuteness of earthly things, poverty, carefulness. Kindness, sometimes money regained after severe toil and labor. Unimaginative, harsh, stern, determined, obstinate." (Weschcke and Slate, p. 477)
